What are Ceramic Zirconia Dental Implants?

Ceramic Zirconia implants are a variety of 100% metal free ceramic based dental implants designed to replace one or more missing teeth. Ceramic dental implants are FDA approved and have been used in Europe for over 20 years. Conventional dental implants are made from a titanium alloy and thus contain metal. Ceramic implants provide an entirely metal free alternative reducing the chance of a patient experiencing a metal sensitivity. In addition to being metal free, ceramic implants are white in color instead of a grey making them more cosmetic in some situations.

What Are Ceramic Zirconia Dental Implants Made Out Of?

Ceramic Zirconia Dental Implants are made out of zirconium dioxide a material proven to be biocompatible and corrosion resistant. Zirconia is extremely stable and cannot be broken down by the body. Zirconia is also naturally tooth colored unlike titanium dental implants which are a metallic grey color.

Gums Love Ceramic Implants!

Research have shown that bacteria can’t attach to zirconia as well as it can to titanium. This makes the gums heal around ceramic implants faster and the gums will be less prone to inflammation. With ceramic implants, the blood flow around gums is more similar to that of a natural tooth when compared to a conventional dental implant.

Why Neodent Zirconia Implants?

Dr. Tatarin prefers to use Neodent Ceramic Zirconia Implants because they function similarly to conventional titanium implants however the implant body does not contain any metal. Neodent Zirconia implants are a “2-piece” system meaning that there are many more prosthetic options than conventional older-style zirconia implants. This means that Neodent Zirconia implants can be used for a variety of applications from single tooth replacement, to multiple toot replacement and even full arch replacement. Our office is able to best utilize the latest in dental implant planning and placement by utilizing Neodent Zirconia implants.

What are the Steps To Get A Ceramic Dental Implant?

After a brief consultation, Dr. Tatarin will evaluate the specific needs of the patient. He will then order a CBCT image which will help him visualize the patient’s specific anatomy. After the image is taken he will digitally plan the implant which improves patient safety and reduces the time of the procedure. The patient is then scheduled for the implant placement procedure which includes the surgical insertion of the dental implant in to the jawbone. After the implant is inserted the area is allowed to heal anywhere from 2-6 months before the replacement tooth is attached to the implant. During this time the patient will wear a “healing cap” over the implant to keep the area healthy and to train the gums to grow around the implant. After the implant has successfully integrated in to the jaw, the healing cap is removed and a permanent tooth replacement is added.

Do Ceramic Dental Implants Hurt?

Most patient experience very few symptoms if any. After the surgical implant placement the area will be a little tender for a few days however the post-operative discomfort is almost always less than the extraction of a natural tooth. Dr. Tatarin will prescribe an antibiotic and a gentle pain-killer after the implant is placed.
